Galley type of place on Westside

I used to be a big fan of The Galley in S. M. but it just isn't as good as it once was. Any ideas for a similar place - not so much the atmosphere but great steak, soup, bread... steamed clams would be nice but not critical. Maybe American with a twist. I know I am in the minority but I don't understand the popularity of The Nook and the food at Chez Jay is average.

  1. The Galley is still our "go to" place because my wife loves their clams and separate bowl of broth for dipping. I just don't think there is any other place on the west side that has that. I have never had the steamed clams up at Malibu Fish and Seafood on PCH, but it's pretty far north (or maybe Neptune's Net - but that's even farther north). The only other place that does this that we have been to is down in San Pedro at the 22nd St. Landing Bar and Grill. They do a bucket of clams with broth and freshly baked foccacia bread for dipping.

Do you really find the Galley that different? We took my family (12) for Christmas Eve dinner there and I thought it was pretty much as it has always been.

Not sure if it offers the separate bowl for dipping them but Blue Plate Oysterette [blueplatesantamonica.com 1355 Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica] does have steamers on the menu.

I saw that, but the price gave me pause. I recall when Menemsha (the forerunner of Beechwood) gave us exactly 9 little clams in a net bag with no clam sauce to dip into. Cute, but utterly absurd.
