Need recs for a Japanese restaurant in Vancouver/Kits area

My bf and I are from Victoria, but will be in Vancouver in a few weeks for a hockey game (GO CANUCKS!) and his birthday, and need recommendations for a Japanese restaurant. There will probably be about 10 people total, with a couple of very picky eaters - one will only eat Teriyaki chicken and rice. All of the good Japanese places we know or want to try aren't good for picky eaters. I am hoping to find a place that serves Teriyaki, but also really good sushi/sashimi, ideally in the Kitsilano area as that is where we're staying, but will travel for good food.

Any suggestions will be appreciated, I've lurked on these boards for a long time, and I've never been disappointed with the restaurants recommended on here.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Yuji or Hapa come to mind (I don't think that Hapa has teriyaki though - may want to have a look at their menu online).

    1. Dan on Broadway near McDonald so right in the heart of kits. So good, they do some great teriyaki and rice bowls and have a lovely party room for a group your size. Make a reservation though.

        seconded! I love Dan.

haven't eaten their teriyaki but I've never had a bad dish there.

      2. I highly recommend Octopus Garden on Cornwall, just east of Maple St:

Dunno if they have teriyaki, though. It's not on the menu.

Another "fun" place for large groups is The Club House on W.2nd Ave at Crowe St (west of Olympic Village). They have a private par-tay room in the back upstairs, and definitely have teriyaki:

Was going to recommend Octopus' Garden - but thought that seating 10 might be a problem.

No room for 10 @ Octopus Garden-not @ one table.

Dan would work but you might be upstairs-a mixed blessing.

Other than that there are a number of ersatz 'japanese' places around.

........ such as The Eatery, W. Broadway just east of Alma.

It's been a long time but i've seen 10 or so when they line up the tables on the wall where the aquarium is/was. Talk to Sada and see what's up.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I've made resos at Yuji's, they have a minimum charge of $20/person for parties of 6 or more, but I don't think that will be a problem.

Dan would have taken the reservation, but they recommend pre-ordering or the food comes really slowly, so I decided to go with Yuji's. Plus they have teriyaki chicken on the menu, and is within stumbling distance of where we are staying.

Thanks again, and I'll let you know how it goes!!
