White Horse Tavern - Newport

I had read some very mixed reviews of the White Horse Tavern in Newport, so went with some trepidation. However, both my wife and I had an excellent experience. The service was good, and the food even better. I got the pan seared scallops with risoto and she got the beef wellington. Sure, each dish was probably about $5 more than it should have been, but you are paying for the atmosphere and history of the place as well. Plus, they have a section on the menu of cheaper entrees if you want to keep the price down (i.e. steak frites for $19 I think).

I used to love the place, circa early to mid-2000s. Then it went downhill for a time (new management?) and I haven't returned in a good 5 years or maybe more. I used to be OK with the prices, as the service and food were always excellent. I hope they have indeed found their groove again.

I dined at White Horse Tavern a lot of years ago during a weekend stay in Newport and had a fantastic meal. I'm happy to hear of your experience. I agree it is pricey but the services was wonderful and you also pay a bit extra for the history, but I thought it was worth it.

We have not been in a few years but I have memories of a fantastic meal and the best waiter that I have ever had- an English gentleman who was subsequently promoted to maitre'de. The vegetarian lasagna was to die for. Lobster was terrific
