Farmers markets open in winter

kaavali Jan 3, 2011 06:33 PM

After a summer of eating fresh produce from farmer's market, I am not content with the grocery store offerings. Are there markets that remain open through the winter and are worth checking out? Failing that, what grocery stores do you shop at?

The market in Leesburg VA is year round.

Both the Waverly Market in Baltimore and the Takoma Park Market are open all year round.

Is anything local at Waverly this time of year? The non-local vendors get sort of huffy when I ask, so inside scoop is appreciated.

The lettuce folks use greenhouses (Chesapeake greenhouse).

no when the winter market starts there is not to much that is local. most of those farmers won’t be back at the market until spring but the orchards are still there (i.e. black rock or reeds) and of course there is cheaspeake greenhouse :). even if it is not local, some of the resale vendors there do have higher quality stuff than my grocery store and cheaper than my whole foods. i work for a farm that only sells local stuff and i still buy from the resellers in the winter months. i know the op specifically asked about produce but you can still get some nice local meats, cheeses, etc there is the winter.

You didn't say where you are located. I go to three per week. The FreshFarm market at Dupont Circle on Sundays has the broadest selection. It's at the Q St. Metro entrance from 10 am to 1 pm in the winter. On Saturdays I like New Morning Farm at the Sheridan School at 36th and Alton Pl. NW from 9 am to 1 pm. There's also a very good market in downtown Silver Spring on Saturdays. On Wednesdays I go to Twin Springs Orchards market at Bethesda's Concord St. Andrews Church at River and Goldboro from 10 am to 2 pm. They all carry different things.
