I'm looking to buy yams (not sweet potatoes) in Toronto, preferably North York - does anyone know where they are available?

Sunny Foodmarket on Don Mills south of Eglinton has a huge selection of tubers.

Not your ideal location but the first veg stall on the east wall of the south market at St. Lawrence always has yams as well as many other great root vegetables.

What kind of yams? We buy yellow yams (like what you'd get from a caribbean place) from the Jamaican shops around Eglinton/Oakwood. No Frills and Best Win generally carries these types of yams as well.
