Herb/seed sellers in Manhattan?

Did a search and couldn't really find anything relevant.

I'm looking for the best place to buy herbs/seeds in Manhattan. Obviously, Union Square Greenmarket was my first thought—but I'm not sure if any of the vendors sell seeds.

Union Square Greenmarket
Broadway and E 17th St, New York, NY 10003

  1. I hope you get some good responses to this query, 'cause I'd like to know myself. I've not seen any seeds for sale at the Greenmarket, but on my spring visits to the New Amsterdam Market, some vendors were giving away seed samples. I scored some beets and some lettuce.

And this hardware store has an okay selection of seeds - I grew herbs on my balcony using them.

Additionally, you can often find seeds at the Chinese supermarkets. I'm positive I saw them at the giant one near the Roosevelt Ave. subway station.

That said, your best bet is probably mail order.

Thanks! I'll do mail order if nothing else, but I'd love to buy local. Hoping to get some herbs and veggies going this spring.

Check in hardware stores -- I know there is one relatively near me on the UES that has them, Wankel's.

Edit - oops, just saw that small h made the same suggestion.

    2. One more suggestion: the Home Depot at 59th & 3rd (and maybe the 23rd St. one also - I forget) has a garden department. I saw seeds there on one visit - on my next visit they had vanished. For this and other reasons, I have a love/hate relationship with Home Depot, but it's worth a shot if you're walking by. There used to be an awesome garden store around 96th and Broadway, but I think it's gone. Alas.

Plant Shed is still on 96th near Bway. Not sure if that's the one you mean. I know they sell "starter" plants (like tomatoes and herbs and such) during the season but I don't know if they sell seeds.

It is? This is excellent news. You have made me very happy, as I've been trying to confirm its...extancy? from down here on the LES (would've been a lot easier if I remembered the name). I have a vague recollection of seeing seeds there, but considering how vague my other recollections are about the place, don't trust me.

That is the correct address that you linked to. Of course it shows how much I know since I didn't even realize they had a website. duh. I still don't know if they sell seeds though. The OP can give them a call.

Also, as someone else said, I have seen plant/garden stuff at Home Depot (on 23rd). Again, I'm not sure about seeds though.

Thanks! I've been in the 23rd Street Home Depot and seen the gardening section; will have to check for seeds next time.

        3. Why not get yourself a seed catalog and then you'll have 100's of choices. You might google Park Seed Co., W.Atlee Burpee, Johnny's Selected Seeds and have them send you one.
