Dim Sum close to Baltimore?

  • 8

I love Dim Sum, but I havent found one since I moved back to the Batimore area. I live in Harford Co abd I am willing to travel for a good place to eat. I have eaten in NYC Chinatown and Boston Chinatown. Can anyone give some suggestions? Thanks

  1. Two suggestions: Asian Court on Rte 40 in Ellicott City and Red Pearl near the mall in Columbia.

They're both pretty far from Harford County. However, Asian Court has been the reigning dim sum place near Baltimore. Certainly the best option around here, and I think that the City Paper said it was worth driving out from the city.

Red Pearl is new, but I would recommend it even more. Great classics like the shu mai and BBQ pork steamed dumplings. Plus cart after cart of choices, including unusual things like soups, roast duck, roast pork, etc. It's a drive for you, but it would be a fun one.

Just looked up Asian Court, since we swing down rte 40 all the time. First thing I see? "Asian Court: Authentic Chinese Cuisine and Fresh Sushi" Ugh.

The marketing is bad, but the dim sum is ok.

Yeah -- don't worry about the marketing. Dim sum is good. I have also heard that you can get roast pork/duck at Asian Court if you ask the waiter. It doesn't come around on the cart.

what about dim sum in DC? Is there a Chinatown fave?

Oriental East, as mentioned, isn't bad, but the atmosphere is a bit crowded. I've never noticed the staff to be rude, but the crowds are definately there between 11 and say 1pm. I recommend trying Hollywood East in the Wheaton (Westfield) Mall, Silver Fountain out in Aspen HIll, or Good Fortune on University, just west of Georgia Ave. For the most part, those in the DC area don't think highly of the chinatown restaurants. Ping Pong dim sum or something like that opened not that long ago... I haven't been, but at least one reviewer said that dim sum for two, with a bottle of wine I think, was over $100. Skip the wine, eat in the burbs, and do dim sum for two under $30.

      2. Oriental East in Silver Spring is REALLY good. I know that's a hike for you but I really prefer it to Asian Court.

The vibe at Oriental East is poisoned for many when they're crowded by overtly rude staff and terrible waiting situation, standees in dining room, unhappily hungry and hovering. Wheaton has 3 better places.
