Wor Won Ton Soup In The San Ferando Valley

Hughlipton Jan 2, 2011 10:51 AM

I know that the best wor won ton is going to be out in SGV or Monterey Park or at least downtown. I would like to know, however, is there any place that makes a better than average rendition of the soupin the Valley. From Lankiershim on the East to Balboa on the West and from Ventura Blvd. on the South to Sherman Way on the North. Thanks.

Sam Woo (on Sepulveda near Victory) or A&W (on Reseda near Sherman)

Thanks Ipse. don't know why I didn't think of Sam Woo's as I go there every now and then for their tripe in black bean sauce.

Maudie I go to Bamboo frequently and their Wor Won Ton is good but not what I consider to be above average. Most of their other dishes are well above average to my taste and for the Valley they do a good job. I think they have switched chefs though because lately I've been finding their food to be a little bland.

Hello... Wife and I just ate at 88 Chinese (and Sushi?), the place right next to Zankou Chicken on Sepulveda Blvd. in Van Nuys... Started with the war wonton soup (around $2.95 for one, or $5.95 for two, I believe), which I thought was fine. Large serving for two, could have easily served four. Broth was very clear and tasted of real chicken. Soup included several shrimp, pieces of bbq pork, plump ground chicken-filled wontons, and peapods, and bok choy. Really perfect for a cold evening (and they were open till midnight on New Year's Day!) We also enjoyed good versions of honey walnut shrimp, bbq pork, and a crispy noodle with beef and vegetables. Prior visits have included solid versions of egg foo yong and pork lo mein. Portions are large; ambiance is stark but clean (same with restrooms). Waitstaff friendly/helpful. Never tried the 'sushi' side of their large menu... I guess this is hong kong-style chow?, but I would call it cantonese. Very solid. And I was awaiting some hidden-msg disaster in the aftermath, which thankfully never materialized, so I suppose they don't use it or go very light. I like it alot there, but then I uniformly like 99% of the food I wolf down anywhere, when dining out...

A great resource (88 Chinese and Sushi) for delivery dining on cold, rainy nights in the Sherman Oaks/Van Nuys area.

A real good version is the one at Kung Pao China Bistro in Studio City. Full of Wor, wonton, and flavor!

I like the food at Tampa Garden a lot and the service from mom and daughter too! But do they have the Wor Won Ton Soup that Hughlipton is seeking?

i adore Tampa Garden and eat there frequently. but the one time i ordered the Wor Won Ton soup, it was not hot enough. (i am referring to the actual temp, not any level of spicy. i know it shouldn't really be spicy, but i just wanted to be clear.)

my fave Wor Won Ton soup in the Valley is from Super Wok on Reseda/Ventura Blvd. their version is the only thing i want when i am sick. it really makes me feel better.

even when i am not ill, i love it. the broth is piping hot and all the ingredients are very fresh and bright tasting.
