Farm House What?

Wow is this a dud! I don’t get it that this is a Zagat 26. This reveals the problem with "neighborhood" restaurants. You get the Neighborhood to vouch for a mediocre at best place and Zagat buys it. Staff is completely unprepared with no knowledge of the menu. The chef seems to focus on cafeteria style entrees. Lots of breading, more starch on the side and no creativity what so ever. I guess the neighborhood likes overpriced flavorless food. I strongly recommend a car ride to Addison, Brasserie, Bastide, Market or Arterra to experience something more worthwhile.

Details on the 12/31/10 tasting menu:

Amuse Bouche – dry with no hint of cheese and cold
Onion tart – dough had not been prepared properly and turned into cereal. No flavor
Foie gras – Nice paring with persimmon but the veins where left in the Foie and the cardboard it was served on was dry.
Mushroom crusted Cod – This was a copy of fish and chips from elementary school. Cod topped with a large amount of oily breadcrumbs (no sign of mushrooms) the veggies were nice.
Dessert – who cares after this meal!

  1. I think Farmhouse is a good restaurant which sometimes has consistency problems. We have been more than 10-15 times there over the years and many dishes were good (though only a few were really outstanding) but we still never had a single visit were everything was flawless. Normally their fish dishes are better choice than the meat dishes. One bigger problem we have with Farmhouse and why we also don't go more often is that they hardly changed their already small menu over the years which includes some less successful dishes, moroccan inspired pasta dish, flatbread, escargot risotto). and so the menu gets boring relatively fast.

    1. I have had very positive outcomes with this restaurant. Sounds to me like a way off encounter. If this was your first try, give them another chance. If this is a repeaded experience, forget them.

      1. Gosh, I only went to this restaurant one time (upon the recommendation of John Alonge, founder of the San Diego Wine & Culinary Center ) and loved it! It was a couple months ago, so I'm not sure I can name the exact dishes we ordered or anything, but I remember thinking my meal was delicious. Actually, I do remember being unimpressed with the dessert, but the rest was very good.
