Post-opera near Lincoln Center
We are meeting a friend who sings at the Met after the performance of Traviata next Wed (1/5). Need suggestions for somewhere nearby with small plates/grazing/bar food and drink; prefer something in the "reasonable for Manhattan" price range (maybe $30 or so per person plus tax and tip). Thinking about Bar Boulud--any comments?
IMO, you have to be careful to get away w/ $30 there. Check prices on menupages and see if it will work for you.

I love Bar Boulud. You can do it for $30 if, as noted, you're careful. Nearby, at the bar: Marea. Or just below Columbus Circle: Blue Ribbon Sushi. Or: bar at Picholine. Or: Nougatine.

Do we need a res at Boulud for 1030 or so on a Tuesday?

What time, and for how many? Bar Boulud is a popular post-performance spot, for good reason. During the summer, it is not as difficult to get a table, as they have a lot of tables outside. In the winter, though, it is probably smarter to make a reservation. You could always make it for a little later than you think you might make it, and if you get there early, just have a drink while waiting for a table. If you share a bottle and then get some small plates, $45 a piece should not be a problem. The charcuterie is particularly good.

After looking at some menus, I'm realizing we'll have to go somewhat higher (say, $45), which is OK--location is important.

I hesitated to say anything earlier because I did not see how you could do even a simple meal for $30 at Bar Boulud, and could not think of anything else to recommend. With a higher budget, you will be able to do Boulud, and I think that is still the best choice. Definitely make a res, it gets extremely busy.

Salumeria Rosi is perfect so long as you don't have a large group. They have small plates, priced very reasonably and will fit in your budget and the food is delicious.
