Bruno's are open on New Year's Day, and they carry some Dufflet's cakes.

Whole Foods in Yorkville is also open on New Year's Day.

I was there earlier and Whole Foods had a lot of cakes ready to go.

Maxim's at Bayview and Finch if you live up north?! They use fresh cream and cake is not too sweet. Can 'customize' your greetings on cake there and then!

Summerhill Market is your best bet.

Wow, had this exact same problem last night after I realized too late in the evening that everything would be closed. Well our Chinese friends hooked us up. Red House Bakery is open in Markham at 11 Glen Watford Drive (around Midland and Sheppard). They made us a beautiful fresh fruit and cream filled sponge cake (iced and decorated for New Years) that we just picked up and will be taking to my parents' house tonight. There are cakes in the display window that are ready to go, but if you call ahead you can order a custom cake - 416(?)299-3355 (not entirely sure about the area code but should be either 416 or 905). The person who picks up might not be entirely fluent in English but they should have someone who is. Otherwise just go directly to the bakery. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Any Chinese bakery would be open on Jan 1.

If I am not mistaken Glen Watford and Sheppard is Scarborough, which means the area code is more likely to be 416

Get some frozen cakes - serious. I think Mcains is not such a horrible idea and get some berries from the local fruit store and whipping cream cans. MIx the whole thing together in a crazy kinda way.
