What is the one fave dish you had in the greater boston area this year?

nasilemak Dec 29, 2010 07:23 AM

Just one...alright, if that's too hard then just add one more!

for me it was the Crab and silky noodle claypot at Dumpling Cafe.

It would have to be the Gypsy Pancake at Cafe Polonia. Hungarian goulash sandwiched between two large potato pancakes and topped with dollops of sour cream.

The Bucatini Carbonara from Metropolis Cafe in the South End. Amazing sauce, great flavors coming from the egg, cheese, pork, and pasta. Such a great dish.

Organic duck egg sformato with white truffles, aged parmegiano regiano, and marjoram at Erbaluce. EASILY the best thing I had in Boston in 2010.

In Seville, jamon every day for a week. Cmon now.

That sublime sformato was a highlight here, too.

Many good things at Istanbul'lu, too tough to pick just one, but since there's a gun at my head, I'll take the paca (lamb soup).

Also the da la p'i at Unique has been eternally etched into my brainpan as well.

Which reminds me of another Boston highlight this year when a Chicago friend came to visit - in addition to the aforementioned dishes, in a single weekend we also had: cocktails at the Franklin, dinner at Estragon, second dinner at Peach Farm, brunch at Istanbulu, oysters at B&G, cocktails at Deep Ellum (twice), dinner at Unique, brunch at Chung Shin Yuan, cocktails at Drink, dinner at YoMa, pizzas at Reginas, beers at Bukowskis, oysters at ECG, dinner at Coppa, and a Speeds dawg, and I think I'm missing a couple of other things.

If not given the chance to reflect on the year, I might have nominated the chimi I just scarfed from Alex's minutes ago.

You only had the jamon once a day, yumyum?

Tough to pick one, but Erbaluce definitely contributed several of the top ones: maybe the bowl of garlickly periwinkles. Cheating, but I'd have to say the pork knuckle at U Zlaté Hrušky, a sort of gastropub in Prague, which I had to fight bees for.

Holy moly, I went to U Zlaté Hrusky about four years ago. We just happened upon it. I thought it was great too but more formal than gastropub, though that may have been because of the table of German businessmen next to us who were buying wine from deep in the cellar...

I'm a huge fan of the Gnocchi al forno at Cantina Italiana in the North End. I can eat an entire plate and still want more, and I almost always get too full on pasta to finish the whole thing. This stuff is phenomenal.

..every Bahn Mi from Pho Viet was satisfying this year, and the price is ridiculous.

The poached egg is also on my very short list. The one knock against it in my mind was it had the misfortune of being the one thing on my VSL that I had several times and while some times it was awesome, other times it was just ok. The others on the VSL might have been a lucky night, but they were 100% awesome all 1 times i had them :)

My favorite things I ate for the first time in Boston restaurants this year included:

Taboulleh and Spicy Chicken/Spicy Beef Schwarma at Garlic 'N Lemons

Pea salad with crispy egg at Bergamot

Lobster bisque at the harvard club. I noticed someone mentioned deep ellum on this thread, I was exposed to their brunch this year, it is fantastic - killer manhattans too. If you live in allston/brighton you have to go.

i have mentioned it before; mulan's eel with sticky rice.

but i like the seafood at Craigie's; that is my favorite part of their menu.

Oh, I'll second that bacon, but the best new thing I had this year was that pea green salad with the panko-crusted egg at Bergamot. I'm afraid to go back because it might not be as sublime and I don't want to wreck the memory.

My head hurts trying to think of one. I'll go with the Lobster Roe Noodles at Island Creek Oyster Bar.

I'm sure that I've had plenty of other great dishes of equal quality, but those noodles jump to the front of my head first.

The carbonara at Coppa was pretty awesome too.

Pupusas revueltas (filled with creamy mixture of pork, refried beans, cheese) from Montecristo Restaurant in Somerville. We get them take-out so we can fry them a little more crispy. Eat alone as a snack or as a raft for fried eggs or as a partner to MR chicharrones.
