dinner and brunch recs please??
hi. we're in our late 20s, from nyc, will be in montreal from dec 30 to jan 2nd. would appreciate some restaurant recommendations. for thursday dec 30 dinner, we are debating between DNA, lemeac (the 10pm menu), and salle a manger. any advice? we have a res for les 400 coups for saturday jan 1 dinner. is that a good choice? tried a few others that are mentioned on this site, but many are closed or booked. we are also looking for a fun brunch spot for sat jan 1st. called sparrow and reservoir and one's closed and the other didn't answer. brunch is a priority as we have no options at this point. if you can recommend some bars or lounges for after dinner that would be greatly appreciated as well. many thanks!!

Les 400 Coups is absolutely amazing. Don't worry. It's new yes, but it was opened by 2 renowned chef (Leméac, Laloux/Pop, Newtown) in Montreal, so they know what they're doing.
Plus... I don't want to repeat myself... but if you like desserts, it's the place to be right now.

re: Glaff
this new place Le Hachoir serves brunch and although i have not yet gone, it has got consistently good reviews, you will have to check if open on Jan. 1, here are some photos from a review:

So I think you're on the right course but I'd probably aim to make reservations ASAP, since as you mentioned most things are closed (and so the rest are very busy). I'm actually not a huge fan of SaM, though not for any particular reason - it just doesn't seem to do anything new, though it is reasonably good food. Thus, I'd aim for DNA or Lemeac, but a decision between the two may be dictated by your budget.
As for brunch, this will be a super busy day, and again, many places will probably be closed. Sparrow has moved (in a way)... it is now across the street and called Lawrence, but the brunch menu is essentially the same. If you can get in you'll be pleased, but they only accept reservations for parties of 6+. Waiting in line is feasible but I'd aim to be there early (i.e. before 10:30). Reservoir will likely be open but also doesn't take reservations. I hesitate to recommend others as I really don't know what will be open... Anywhere will involve waiting, I predict.
The Jan. 1 dinner at Les 400 coups is going to be a gamble - I've heard its good but it just opened so most on this board probably won't have been. If you go make sure to let us all know!
Good luck!›2 Replies-

Heads-up that Lawrence is closed til Jan. 5, unfortunately.

as 400 coups recently opened it seems not many reviews posted, if you are dressed warm and want to take in the party in old montreal nearby the restaurant here are the details
http://www.lesfeeriesduvieuxmontreal.info/nouvelles.php?lang=enhere is a persian brunch spot in plateau area, always animated whenever I have gone but not so easy to get to without car, Byblos
http://montrealbreakfastreview.com/byblos#more-274there is a central place eggspectation in complexe desjardins facing quartier des spectacles and although a chain, it is central a plus when tired or weather too cold (metro place des arts or even walking from downtown), the breakfasts are served all day i believe and you can have the regular dishes as well as variations of crepes, waffles, bagels. Because of its location it will likely be less dead than other places during holiday period.
