In Need of a Special Suggestion

Snoop37 Dec 27, 2010 07:00 PM

Hello Hounds,
It's been a looong time since I've written on the forum. After graduating from BC, I moved back to RI and I've been hanging out here ever since.

I need a little help today though. I'll be leaving for St. Maarten this weekend. I'm leaving for med school and I'll be living on the island for the next two years. I have a boyfriend in Boston and we have been dating for 3 years and I want to do a nice blowout dinner with him before i go. I've got $170 exactly and I want to go to a restaurant in the Boston area.

So, what do you experts think? Where should we go? Any recommendations on what to order? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I want to make this a special and fantastic dinner. Thanks you guys in advance.

Craigie on Main, Bistro du Midi, or Rendezvous are worth it.
Everything is good. Fish @ the bistro.

Congratulations on med school! How about Salts in Cambridge? I think the entire experience there is great - excellent food and service, nice wines by the glass or bottle. Cozy dining room. And you could get the roast duck for 2.

If you both like steak, the Chateaubriand for 2 at the Oak Room (at The Coply Plaza Hotel) may be up your alley. Haven't personally tried the Oak Room, but it got good reviews & it seems more quiet than most dining rooms so you can enjoy spending the time together - & not having to shout over the noise. Whatever you pick, enjoy - & good luck in med school!

The Oak Room was so bad on a recent visit...really sad since the servers were chill and the room is silly and stuffy. The food, however, was flat out grim. If you're looking for good and stuffy...Grill 23 and Harvest, both Ken Himmel productions (a Per Se owner), have great ingredients and great chefs.

Too bad about The Oak Room - I was trying to think of some place quiet & local. The 2 best I can think of are too far away from Boston (Burdick's in Walpole, NH & On The Marsh in Kennebunk, ME). Grill 23 from what I hear about it is LOUD - that's why I haven't bothered to try it yet. Plus, it's a steakhouse & I was trying to think of something more romantic than that (but my hubby would LOVE the steakhouse idea!).
What about the restaurant at The Boston Harbor Hotel (can't think of the name).? You could even do a walk around Boston/Faneuil Hall/North End if it wasn't too cold afterward. Have you tried it yet scotty - & is it any good if you have?
Troquet is good if your boyfriend is into wine - & the food's supposed to be good too. Grotto & Trattoria Toscano if your in the mood for Italian might fit the bill too. (Yup, 3 more I haven't tried yet - I REALLY need to get out more often!). Let me know scotty if those are good - I would hate to steer them in the wrong direction!

You're right: Grill 23 can be noisy.
Great beef from Brandt: prime, aged, etc.

Meritage is at the Harbor, no? I was only there once. I enjoyed it. Great views.

Congrats! Awesome place to head for 3 years too, especially after this weekend's storm :-)

I'd echo Rendezvous...also add Island Creek Oyster Bar and Bergamot.
Would help if you specified what kind of food. For Italian, I'd include Mamma Maria.

I'll second Bergamot. The food, cocktails, and service are all top-notch.
