Unique Cocktails, Good Food and Music

janeyoc Dec 27, 2010 02:00 PM

My husband and I are in our early 40s and would like to find a restaurant/lounge in the downtown area (Financial / Nob Hill / nearby areas) that has unique cocktails, good food and live music (jazz/piano/contempory lounge music).

We are from the OC area and like to go to Mastro's Ocean Clue and eat in the bar area on the weekends. There is a guy playing the keyboard and great female singer crooning all types of music. It is fun people watching with the cougars on the prowl. Looking for something similar in SF.

Last time we were in SF we went to Cafe Claude which we enjoyed the music. Also Gitane which has good cocktails but kinda boring just sitting in the bar with no music.

Thanks for your help!

Top of the Mark is a swanky bar at the top of the Mark Hopkins Intercontinental Hotel. They frequently have live music, and the views are incredible. I haven't been in a few years and don't remember the cocktails being on par with the newer mixology-influenced bars, but I'd bet you can get a nice martini.

Not finding too much recent that comments specifically on the food at Bix (already sold on the cocktail list and live jazz trio). Anyone have any recentish recs for what to eat there?

I haven't been in about two years, but it's the kind of place where the food is good or very good (depending what you order) but probably won't sweep you off your feet. However, the space is lovely and I like taking out of town guests there because it's so pretty and the food is safe. The very good included:

            -foie gras
            -bone marrow
            -tuna tartare
-anything tableside: beef tartare, tomatoes if you're here in season, desserts
-chicken hash, my favorite. I've never seen anyone else do this dish the way Bix does.

Thanks, Pei -- the other intel I had on Bix was from a 2009 comment of yours so thanks for confirming :-). I've also read they do a mighty fine club burger and fries so may try that with something tartared. I think we'll be too early for tomatoes tableside, alas, but that sounds lovely.
