Non-Canned Sardines in DC?

JohnSmith2 Dec 24, 2010 08:37 AM

Hi there -- I just watched the Mark Bittman video on broiling fresh sardines and would love to cook them, but am unfamiliar with buying them fresh (i.e. not in cans). Any ideas? Whole Foods? Giant? Harris Teeter?

Euro Latino Market on Pershing Drive in Arlington used to have them, call.

Black Salt on MacArthur sometimes has them; again, call ahead

definitely a call ahead item, but occasionally I've seen them on an unpredictable basis at the Eastern Market.

I didn't shop at Wegmans for this Xmas, but last year Wegmans did have fresh sardines.

However, since they're even more highly perishable than most other seafood & are normally only offered for Xmas ("Feast of the Seven Fishes", etc., etc.), you'd better make a search effort now, because they're likely to be gone from most sources by now.

The Maine Ave Fishmarket or try H-mart if you want to save some $$$ rather then going to BlackSalt or Whole Foods

Eastern Market had them as of a couple of weeks ago.
