Good, Friendly Cafe

Here's a plug for a good, friendly cafe on San Pablo @ Virginia in Berkeley -- Cafe Leila. I went there today with my sister and three of our kids. My son and I had BLTs -- very tasty bacon, they followed our request for light mayo. The tomatoes were a bit lackluster, but that's more our fault for ordering something with T in December. Best news, though, from a mom's perspective, my son gobbled up the salad -- the dressing was really tasty and not over-powering. My sister and her kids split a tuna salad sandwich (which got eaten up in a flash) and a California wrap (which was a bit harder to eat -- good parts, but the presentation needs work).

We've been here a bunch of times and the service is always very friendly. They'll make things off-menu (like a fruit plate) and are very accommodating to kids. The back garden is lovely and has funky kitchen-themed art (an enormous whisk, for example) that is fun to look at.

  1. I've been to Leila for tea before, but this weekend we stopped by for a snack and really enjoyed a mango smoothie (not too sweet, make with low-fat plain frozen yogurt) and a really delicious lamb burger. And of course pots of looseleaf tea.

Such a beautiful patio, and the interior is welcoming too. Big parking lot (not that you need it), great prices. Free wireless, but it's not mobbed with laptops.
