Cheap eats recs

Hi all, I recently got almost a week off work for nothin so Im heading over to Mtl, havent been in years. Gonna be staying in a Hi-Hostel at 1030 Mackay st. I am looking for some reccomendations for good cheap eats. Some really good poutine would be great too. I wanted to make it out for an expensive meal too, but the last minute bus cost is already astronomical.

Anyway thanks for any help, and happy holidays.

Check out these threads. They cover the bases, pretty much. The hostel is close to "Chinatown 2," which has several cheap Chinese restaurants. If interested in that type of cuisine, Qing Hua Dumpling, Maison du Nord and Cuisine Szechuan are among the best. Kazu for Japanese and Avesta for Turkish are also near your hostel. Of course I'd recommend getting away from downtown and up into the Plateau where there is Schwartz's, Romado's, Patati Patata, La Banquise, and M'me Bolduc. The first is smoked meat, the second is grilled Portuguese chicken, the third is burgers and poutine (and just plain fun place to be), and the last two are the best places for poutine.

for splurging, many restaurant have lunch menu deals and then several very good restaurants have late night deals starting at 9 or 10 pm depending on restaurant

Patati Patata has cheap breakfasts and every meal is cheap, their hamburgers although small are $2, also have fish fillets, veggie burgers, etc and poutine, you can get a bus pass at a special rate for three days that allows unlimited travel and this restuarant is easy to get to by bus up st laurent street, starting at st. laurent metro http://www.stm.info/english/tarification/a-1a3jours.htm

You are near two canadian coffee chains tim horton and javu U and there are also some specialized more expensive coffee places nearby if you want the best of the best-see coffee thread
You are also near arouchi if you like armenian pizza, you get a small size pizza (not a slice) for $2.75 http://www.arouch.com/en/index.php

Near your hotel is one of the soupe soup ( crescent street), a montreal chain of homemade soups, might be just the thing on a winter day open 11-4pm except sundays

For breakfast you can go to one of the two bagel places just off of parc, on st viateur or fairmont, the latter is where i go to get bag of 6 warm bagels or get some for a lunch and they sell regular cheese, spreads, salmon to make it into more of a meal.

Near your hostel if you have a craving for croissants you can stop into
premiere moisson pastry shop on sherbrooke not far from guy street
      www.premieremoisson.com - 1490, Rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal

I also like commensal a vegetarian resto 2nd floor Mcgill college and ste catherine, i know some people find it expensive but if you take lighter items it is not expensive (goes by weight), and if you want to feast you actually stack up your plate and never pay more than 13.50 at lunch or 16.50 at night, they have hot and cold buffet and also dessert buffet, no tips needed as selfserve but you can pay less than this if you choose lighter items. The food is nutritious, good variety and there is a nice view of downtown area.

          It's got an odd spelling:

          Ma-am-M Bolduc
          4351 De Lorimier Ave
          http://www.mambolduc.com/

          Don't miss the sugar pie!

Just be sure you go to the resto and don't attempt ordering in! Bolduc delivers some terrible food, bur serves a great poutine in-house!
