recent NY transplant seeking two sandwiches--a cubano & an italian hero

I'm figuring somewhere in North Beach the hero of my dreams is hiding, can anyone tell me where? I've no clue where to start looking for the cubano.
Thanks so much for any help you can offer!

    1. I suggest you visit NY often...
I don't think either really exists in Calif. to match the standards of NY.

      1. I've had some pretty good Italian sandwiches at Molinari's in NB.

        1. Not sure if you're willing to search beyond North Beach, but Uncle Dougie's in Oakland does pretty good heroes (eggplant parm, chicken parm, sausage & peppers and meatloaf) and is near the 19th St. Bart station.

(Tried to add them to the place links and failed- see http://uncledougiesheroes.com/

I think we need misseljay to define her hero. Is it Dougie's style or a sandwich with Italian meats and peppers etc like a Gambino's.

          2. Have you tried Tony's Coal-Fired Pizza and Slice House yet? It offers East Coast style grinders, hero & sub sandwiches. They're made with Acme or Italian French Bakery bread, so won't be an exact match to what you're used to in NY.

            1. The best cubano I've had in SF in recent years was at Paladar. Pretty much spot on except the bread could be softer.

You might try the cubano at Poquito. I haven't tried it yet, but the owner went on at length about the difficulty of finding the right bread, and is enough of a fanatic that he has both a cubano and a medianoche on the menu, made with two different breads.

                Try Mikey's.
