HI Chowhounders,

Am looking for a place that makes authentic tamales for Christmas eve dinner? We live in Lakeview but I am willing to travel anywhere within the city.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Hands Down - La Casa Del Pueblo in Pilsen. You'll have to order ahead for the holidays.
If you like, see the link below for a good article from TimeOut (early last year).

Great rec Tim N...the chicken, bean, and cheese with chile's tamales are standouts! The sopes, tostadas, soups, mole rojo, and of course many other homestyle dishes are all authentic and fantastic! Love this place!

I like to spicy pork too. Also worth noting that their chile relleno is one of the bast I've had in the city.

Yep, they're great too! La Casa Del Pueblo serves the real thing, exactly what I grew up with at home.

The sopes, enchiladas, tostadas, one might think, that they're the same ole same ole like at most other mom and pop restaurants, not a chance...Woah, they're awesome!!!!

There are quite a few places, and I haven't been to many of them, but I can say that La Casa Del Pueblo's are more like the ones I make at home than any others I've tried.

        Other names I hear:
        La Guadalupena
        El Milagro
Tamales Los Mejor Del Guerrero (Up on north clark street)
On California and Belmont, in front of the Mexican grocery store (Guanajuato?), there is a guy with a cart, but he does large orders - no problem. He lives really close, and can get large orders on the spot, or he might need a day or two.

There are plenty of others, hopefully more can chime in with decent spots.
