Minot, Havre, Whitefish

We are contemplating a trip on Amtrak's Empire Builder. We can probably get by with dining car food, but I do a little research and I find that there are restaurants very near the stations in Minot, ND, Havre, MT, and Whitefish, MT, where the train stops at times that are convenient for breakfast, lunch or dinner (depending on which way we're going). Is this do-able? Can I walk to, say, 10 North Main in Minot and get dinner to go and still make it back to the train? Can I call ahead and have them deliver to the station? Anybody have any experience with this? Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

We did the trip a few years ago going west to east. There wasn't enough time to get off and have a fine meal. We did keep a mini cooler filled with charcuterie and cheeses in the our sleeping room. You can bring some wines aboard also. We had a great time and hope to do it again soon.

You might try searching in Mountain States too, as Havre and Whitefish are in Montana (i.e., a Mountain State). I would wager Havre might be a bit tough -- it's essentially a farming town with about 5,000 residents, but Whitefish should be excellent as it's a tourist town.
