Twenty 8 Tables (Saratoga Springs)

Call us crazy but we headed to S. Springs without a reservation, the weekend before Christmas.

Two hours later, we had dinner at Twenty 8 Tables.

First the new space is a huge improvement over 8 Tables. Twenty more tables makes a big difference. There is a bar now. Curtains surround part of the bar making for a dark and cozy atmosphere. It still gets fairly noisy. Lively atmosphere. The pianist is a nice touch. And yes, that big screen TV is at the new location . . .

Nice to see familiar faces (Mark from Dine behind the bar, Sean from Bloomers).

Hostess and bartender stopped by (we weren't forgotten about for 2 hours!). Owner gave our wine glasses a complimentary pour. He also gave SO some bread with ? meat and shaved cheese while we waited. Very gracious and attentive.

Now on to the food:


chicken livers with port wine demi (I've had this before and it's rich and delicious . . .I'm going to finish off the leftovers after this post)

Escargot - I has a taste of SO's, very good.


Sadly no duck pot pie . . .I had the duck breast (large portion, enough for 4). Cooked perfectly. Very good. Just like I remembered it.

SO had the gnocchi ala mina with prosciutto, hot and banana peppers, peas and sage

We will definitely go back, probably on a week night.

    2. We went to Twenty 8 Tables recently.

      I prefer week nights, Twenty 8 Tables is still closed on Sundays and Mondays. We asked if Tuesday Tapas will be suspended during Track Season.

      On to the food:


      We had the Asian tuna nachos with crushed sesame seeds, crispy wontons, spinach and a trio of aioli (seemed like mostly wasabi to me). Tuna was cooked perfectly. Delicious. One of Twenty 8 Tables best apps.

      Calamari - fried, not overcooked, a few hot peppers. This dish was fine but had me longing for Bloomer's American Bistro calamari and pepperocini. . .

      We passed on the chicken livers with port wine and truffle oil which are also one of my favorite apps.


      SO had the fettucini with shrimp, lobster and scallops. He got it white and hot. It wasn't hot. Pepper flakes helped. I think he was in the mood for a creamy sauce . . .What was I thinking? Going to a meat mecca on a Friday . . .

      I had the chicken piccata. The sauce was NOT a traditional piccata sauce. It had balsamic, etc. and was a dark sauce. Absolutely delicious. I could have licked the sauce off the plate! Chicken was cooked perfectly. Mashed potatoes and fresh veggies were good. Crisp tender green beans and julienned beets and carrots. The entire dish needed salt.

        Went to Twenty 8 Tables recently. Service was excellent. Had the Asian tuna nachos and chicken livers with port wine and truffle oil apps. Delicious. Two of their best and most consistent dishes.

        SO had the gnocchi. Pasta was overcooked. He also had the beans and greens and said they were bland. I had the salmon with pineapple. It was warm, not hot. Okay. would not order it again. I wished I had ordered the chicken dish I had last time which was delicious. Our friends had the shrimp and a steak.

        The hearty family style dishes and meat dishes are the way to go.

        For desserts we had chocolate mousse, creme brulee, chocolate brownie. Desserts were very good.

        It's track season . . .there was a lobster special that was $75 pp.

        SO prefers Sperry's over Twenty 8 Tables. I prefer Twenty 8 Tables over Sperry's :)

          Went last week (on Thursday night). We were a table of 7 and the service was great. Owner came over and sat down. Everyone was happy with their food. It may not please real foodies but we thought it was among the best in Saratoga. The atmosphere was fun, dark, and lively.

              Ron Farber (founder and chef at Dine) knows how to treat customers. We had to wait for our reservation and he offered us a complimentary glass of wine while we waited . . .

                Most of us ordered the very generous salads first. Two shared an enormous seafood casserole special...and loved it. Two had chicken parm and another had the chicken breast with carmelized onions (that particular entree did not recieve rave reviews though.) We shared many desserts (sent over by Ron) but can only recall that the cannoli was very good! Sorry FDR, but we ate at Siros and Prime at Saratoga National in three nights and our selections are a bit of a blur! BTW, Siros and Prime were really great too!

                  Twenty 8 Tables and Prime are two of our favorite Saratoga restaurants. Have not been to Siro's. . .

        2. Has anyone returned since the change in chefs?

          Not sure when Ron Farber left, before the end of November.

          Nothing on Yelp since October . . .

            Went before christmas, it has gone down hill since Ron has left. Meatballs were horrible, risotto was taken off the menu, the place was empty for a friday night. Most bar seats were open, and not many in the dining room. I can't see it lasting too much longer. Goes to show that one person can make or break a place. He is missed!

              His sandwich place, Sangwych (former 8 Tables), went downhill as soon as he sold it as well, and just closed. I suspect 28 will close soon.

                Have been since the new owners took over "Panzas" just had apps. they were all outstanding. i would check it out. Great service also.

                  They are briefly closed for renovations. Excited about John Ireland as chef. There will be a name change as soon as legal formalities are finished.
