Kendall's Brasserie and Church & State...any good?

Was at the L.A. Music Center today and considered having dinner at one of these, but realized I've heard nothing, either good or bad about either, in many moons. Has anyone been to either recently...and how are they for dinner?

Kendall's is one of the most overpriced, crappy food, restaurants I have ever been to. Nice service, but who cares, when the food is so bad?

I've been to Kendall's once. It really sucked. Church & State is a much better restaurant.

Let me join the anti-Kendall's group.

I think my review of Kendall's is so old it doesn't even come up in searches. It's too bad, because it described a shockingly bad experience. The one thing I remember the most is that my mother had a seafood soup that came with pieces of shrimp shell in it. She described it as like "eating fingernails." I've returned once since then, about two years ago, and it was still terrible.

Here is a fairly recent review: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/58765

2004 is fairly recent? WOW, CH must really hate KB, I don't blame them. But I am surprised to see no recent reviews. Recent reviews=within past year.

I think people who dine at Kendall's are either too lazy or afraid to eat anywhere else prior to an event at the Music Center, or lawyers at the Superior Court building who want to grab a quick sit-down lunch without walking more than 100 yards.

For lunch downtown, the cafeteria at the Colburn school is quite handy, open 6 days a week(closed Sundays), as is Mendocino Farms at California Plaza, Lemonade at MOCA, among other nearby affordable options.
Kendall's is Patina Group's least common denominator facility, and that cafeteria on the first floor of Disney Hall is not any better, also Patina Group.
If you want something akin to Kendall's for dinner, you are much better at Taix on Sunset & Alvarado, which is about 10 minutes west of the Music Center/Disney Hall.

There is also Cafe Pinot close by which is pretty good. I like the room and the food.

I've always felt Pinot is pretty good. Their 20 prix fixe lunch menu is excellent.

Church and State is much better than Kendalls, I agree. Another good alternative right next to the Music Center is First and Hope.

Sounds like being better tha Kemdall's is a rather low hurdle. How is C & S...and how is First & Hope?

THat's a good question nowadays, they both have lost chefs. First and Hope lost their first chef who opened the restaurant and put together the menu that, while it got some mixed reviews, I thought was a very good take on comfort food. I haven't eaten there since. Church and State has lost two chefs, most notably Walter Manzke who IMO was brilliant. Since then it's still good, but nowhere near where it used to be.

A co-worker of mine ate at First & Hope 12/17 (pre-Disney Hall show) and LOVED the whole experience: the room, service, cocktails & food.

Church and State is one of the best restaurants in the city. I went with family the week of Thanksgiving and we had an amazing meal. Along with terrific food, we had very good service and the drinks from the bar are superb. The escargot - even if you think you would not like them - are incredible. The flatbreads also are terrific. Frankly, it is all superb.
