On short notice, I'll say Pann's. Not the best I've ever had, nor by a long shot the worst - it's possible to get a gristly one, but I never have - and it could be more aggressively fried. But it's reasonably priced, and the sides are all good (hot tip: get the split pea soup). They call it "Country Fried", and it's $8.99 as an entree.

Johnny Rebs' does it right and I really like the feel of the interior of the place. Good people also. I have not yet tried Panns CFS but they do a good job with Fried Chicken and Pea soup. I respect Will Owens opinion. He got me going there. I guess to get it better than these places you might need to post on the greater California Board. IIf I see the post I will give you three more that are a must try while on the road. Hell, I go on the road just to eat at these others.

In the South Bay go to Joes on PCH and Carnelian in Redondo Beach. My favorite chicken fried steak in L.A. (I've not tried Pann's yet)

By "Joes" are you talking about "Eat At Joe's," the place known for omelets and the John Wayne Special? Do they make Chicken Fried Steak?

Yes, that's the one. My sister used to live a half-block from there, so I ate there a LOT in a 15-year span. I love their CFS

You've probably had your chicken fried steak already. But Claim Jumper as I mentioned in the above "Best Chicken Fried Steak" thread is pretty good and there's one in Torrance.

The Claim Jumper in Torrance is now a Tony Romas.

I just learned that Texas Loosie's has chicken fried steak and its the same frozen patty that Johnny Reb's uses.

Is this a serious recommendation?

I was thinking the same thing -- but how serious does a rec have to be when it's made to satisfy a six year old craving?

My craving for CFS is the same today as it was when this thread was initiated...

seems to show that Country Touch in Torrance has CFS; I'm usually distracted by one of their omelettes.

Don't laugh, but Norm's makes a decent country fried steak, at least the one on La Cienega. There is the one on Hawthorne Blvd. We just ate at Eat at Joe's for breakfast, and I had their country fried steak, Norm's is definitely much better. The gravy at Eat at Joe's had no flavor and I had to doctor it up with a ton of black pepper. Try Norm's.
