Providence-Downcity-Kitchen Nightmares

The TV show Kitchen Nightmares just finished a revamp of Providence's Downcity restaurant. I'd be interested to hear from those who have tried the new menu.

  1. I'll admit I have not, but I looked it over. It's about the most generic menu I've seen in my life.

      Wow -- you are 100-percent correct, rat. The food may be good, but the menu looks like it was copied from Ruby Tuesday's, Applebee's, Chili's.... I don't think Gordo tried very hard. Usually he tries to localize the menu but there's little evidence of that here.

        Generic menus abound in this city. The question is, is the food any good?

          Went there last night to try out the new menu. It is smaller, but considering they couldn't handle the breadth of the old one, maybe concentrating on a few items done well is a better idea. I had the cubano sandwich with fries. The sandwich was nice and crispy as it should be (I won't go to Cuban Revolution anymore because they can't even seem to do the very simple task of property pressing a cuban sandwich, it always comes out just barely warm). I would have liked a tad more mustard on it, but otherwise I would absolutely order it again. The sweet potato fries were excellent. My wife got the chicken with cous cous. Sounds boring, but it was spot on. The chicken breast was pan seared and came out nice and moist (I assume they brined it). The cous cous with crandberry and walnuts had lots of flavor and the green beans were still a little crisp. We started with the squash soup and it too was very tasty. The only downside to the night was the group next to us got calamari and said it was under done.

    2. We were there for one of the tapings of the show. It was the "before" show. It is tv, so they did their best to set them up to fail by seating the entire dining room in within a half hour or so. My friends, seated across from me, said that Chef Ramsey kept sending items back to the kitchen, so the kitchen was basically making everything twice. We got a salad, which was good, and calamari which was a bit greasy and the sauce was boring. Dinner never came out. We were there for about 2 hours before we asked for the check and went to another restaurant. We're planning on going back in January to see the transformation.
      We rarely went before this, because they just didn't seem to stand out in any way. Food was mediocre and service was slow. We'll see how they do after the transformation.
