L'inconnu

  • 1

Finally made it to L'Inconnu, after reading a few raves here. Had the Tarte de tomates appetizers, which was very good, served with a side of delicious 'micro-pousses' of lettuce and herbs. The main was much less inspiring: rabbit served 3 different ways: a rable stuffed with mushrooms which was insipid and dry, a small square of fried rillettes, which seemed like a good idea on paper but was also tasteless, and a tiny pot pie which had a delicious crust but forgettable insides. My dinner mate had the gnocci appetizer which was much liked, and the veal liver and tongue which was also good, but served with the same sauce as the appetizer. Dessert of chocolate truffle cake was nice and chocolatey, but nothing to rave about. Service was nice, decor pretty drab. Frankly, with the number of french restaurants in Montreal offering the same type of fare but much better done, I see no reason for going back.

  1. I went back to L'Inconnu this week, and as always, I had a delicious meal. I started off with an entree of sweetbread, perfectly cooked and seasoned. This was followed by gnocchi in a beef braised sauce, and the main was black cod with curried sauce and squash. These two dishes were simply to die for. Succulent, well-balanced, a bit spicy, just perfect. Dessert was a plum pudding with eggnog.

The entire meal was served in perfect coordination by knowledgeable and friendly staff.
L'Inconnu is one of those places that I like to go to when I crave a succulent, out of the ordinary meal. I have never left there feeling disappointed.
