Nightingale Breads - Taking orders for panettone, pick up next week
Feeling guilty because i forgot to post about the seasonal pumpkin bread last month, here's a reminder to order panettone from Nightingale in Forestville. This week's batch is already sold out. Another will be available next week, and reservations are suggested. I've not tasted it myself, but I'd be very surprised if it's not wonderful. Btw, the pumpkin bread has been replaced by a cranberry-pecan loaf.
And, yes, the French loaf is unsurpassed.

Forgot to order one this year too. But when I called to inquire on Saturday, a few were still on the shelf and I reserved one to pick up later in the afternoon.

Yes, quite wonderful, as predicted. So rich in flavor from the butter and egg yolks, yet so airy and tender textured.

Priced at $15 each, and dolled up for gift-giving with red and green ribbons. The back of the label reads: "Panettone is a celebratory bread, claimed to have originated in Milan, Italy. Legends of its origin suggest that its tall, cylindrical shape was created to honor the majestic towers of Milan's famed duomo. The second claims that it was an invention of a clever 'fornaio', Tonio, who proudly named it The bread of Tony. Often toasted on Christmas morning, this yeasted egg bread with candied citrus fruits and raisins is an all day process to make. It undergoes four rising periods to support all the fruit, eggs and butter it contains. Packed in a paper mold, and wrapped perfectly for gift giving. We hope you enjoy this Italian tradition created right here in Forestville!"
The bakery is open Wednesday through Saturday and features a wood-fired oven.

For those closer to the east bay, Starter Bakery's panetone is amazing ($25 - that alone may amaze some ;)). You can special order (by today) or ask them if they'll have it at Grand Lake or Temescal farmer's markets this weekend. http://starterbakery.com/
Panetone also makes the most incredible french toast!
