Poppy Seeds: Weight vs Volume

I have a recipe for Lemon Poppyseed Bread that calls for 1/3 cup of poppy seeds. I have always measured them out with a 1/3 cup measuring cup.

The recipe also notes that 1/3 cup of poppy seeds is equal to 2.5 ounces. I recently obtained a kitchen scale, so when I went to measure out the seeds, I thought I would use the scale to see what happened.

When I weighed out 2.5 ounces of poppy seeds, it looked like a lot more seeds than I normally use, so I then scooped up 1/3 cup of seeds and weighed that. It was only 1.75 ounces.

I decided to stick with the 1/3 cup measurement for the recipe, but I was kind of wondering where the difference was coming from.

  1. Inaccurate scale or badly tested recipe.
