Washington Square Tavern: Any one notice a change?

I've been a big fan of the Tav: like its kitchen and its bar and its winelist. However, this is the second time in a month I've been disappointed. Had the special last night: house cured ham with baked beans and cornbread. The ham was so dry it was close to inedible, the beans were undercooked and the cornbread was unmemorable. The earlier disappointment was a very bland cod fish that lacked all oomph. I'm hoping I just hit two "off" nights but was curious whether any one else noticed a decline?

  1. The former manager and chef left to open a new restaurant. I actually haven't been since they left. I was afraid it wouldn't be as good. I did get a drink once and it was very different and not as good. WST used to have my favorite big burger. Has anyone had it since the chef change?

went there once since the chef change to enjoy their steak frites, which i considered to be the best in town. was hugely disappointed. just wasn't even close to what the dish once was. after hearing others' complaints, honestly, i don't know if i'll be going back there anymore--and i live three blocks away.

Probably you'd be better off just going to The Abbey. The menu looks similar (charred caesar, burger, steak frites, shredded brussels sprouts), with some interesting new things (hoisin bbq broccoli?!). I think I'll definitely just go there next time I have a WST craving.

Has anyone been? How is the decor? Is it cozy and snug like WST?

the burger at Washington Square Tavern is far superior to The Abbey.

The current Washington Square Tavern burger or the burger before the chef left?

I only know the current one, as in the last two weeks.

The chef is now at The Abby as well as the bartender Damian.
They are co owners along with Gina Medaglia , the owner of Dalias which was replaced by The Abbey.

    2. I was a WST regular and agreed- they had a great burger. Just went to The Abbey for the first time last week...It's my new favorite. Burger was fantastic and bun was brioche (I think)-- better than the original. Also had the cod fritters and coq au vin (tried it) and all was delish. Be forewarned: the place is a fraction of the size of WST...so go early or be prepared to enjoy a good cocktail at their tiny bar.

WST is one of my favorite burgers and I've been waiting to hear more about the Abbey since it opened. Thanks for the rec. on their burger. Also do they do a housemade veggie burger like WST? Anyone tried it?
