my wife and i were heartbroken when Katzu closed tama sushi. we were twice a week regulars. we supported him in beverly hills until he closed. we now live in sherman oaks and are looking for a new regular spot. we already know of Nozawa and Asanebo. what other places should we try?

Katsu-ya. Probably your best bet if you liked tama. Kiwami is good too and in the old tama space. Same as Katsu-ya. Same owner and chef.

Iwata is my favorite in Sherman Oaks.

Little Island, on Ventura across from Borders in the La Reina center. Newest outpost of Brothers Sushi of Woodland Hills.

I highly recommend it, in terms of quality and service. Prices are decent to boot.

Go's Mart in Canoga Park has good and very interesting non-traditional sushi.

Sushi Iki in Tarzana has excellent quality fish. It's mostly traditional nigiri. The sushi is very expensive, but the cuts of fish are larger than at most places.

In Woodland Hills, near Corbin, is Sushi Ichiban Kan. The chef there is the former owner of Hirosuke in Encino, but the ambience and quality is better than it was at Hirosuke. He does very good quality nigiri as well as less traditional offerings. That is my favorite sushi in the valley these days and far superior to Nozawa, imo.

Have heard Iwata is quite good, as is House of Taka on Van Nuys Blvd across from Solleys, and the one in the center just east of the Sportsmen's Lodge. Never a need to travel west of the 405 for sushi, since Studio City is known as sushi city, with over 25 places to choose from, by itself, with plenty more in Sherman Oaks.
But Kiwami is a big disappointment - everything tastes the same and is quite expensive. Highly overrated.

I was terribly disappointed with House of Taka the one time I tried it. The fish was just okay quality and while the price was okay, I wouldn't waste my time there.

that's interesting, as two chefs I know really like it on their days off, or even for lunch when they are only cooking dinner meals.

4on6 in Encino...same shopping center as Tony Roma's. Best sushi in my opinion.
