Dim Sum - Early Morning take out in Manhattan
Hi all -
I've decided to contribute dim sum to my office holiday pot luck. I work in the financial district, so Chinatown would be an easy stop on the way to the office in the morning.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good place that opens a bit on the early side, before 8:00 AM, and can accomodate take out? I'll probably order 3 or 4 orders of 3 or 4 different types of dim sum.
I believe most of the restaurants start after the 9 o'clock hour for Dim Sum Service...so I believe your best bet is at a Coffee House. There are probably some places on East Broadway, but I am not familiar with any particular place. I have been to a place on Mott Street that doubles as a bakery for Boa, but for the life of me, I do not know the name of the place.
My only info that may be of use is to suggest Sun Sai Gai on Canal @ Baxter Street. I know I have been there early in the day and gotten items from their steam cabinet. Maybe someone else knows of their exact hours of operation. If Grand Harmony on Mott Street is open, I would suggest you go there. The section from their steam cabinet is very good and if they have the other items ready for the carts, those items will be an added bonus.
Quite a few restaurants have dim sum in their steam cabinets and I know a good number are open by 8am. I think Canal Seafood might be open by then, Also I've hit up Ken's Asian Taste on Bowery and Wonton Garden on Mott pretty early, among others. An alternative would be the Chinese bakeries which are all open by 8 am. They'll have a few familiar dim sum items, particularly baked bbq pork bao, but not most of the varieties of traditional dim sum. However they do have a good variety of baked dim sum type goodies which might be just as appropriate.
