Any thoughts on this restaurant in LB? It's the one located in the old pottery shack on PCH.

I like it a lot (especially for dinner) It's a romantic spot with an eclectic menu! The outdoor area has a great fire pit too.

Thanks junglekitte, I was thinking of it for a Christmas Eve lunch for 2. We wanted it quiet and leisurely. Sounds like it may be the place.

I'll be in LB in a couple of weeks. Their menu looks great. Any guidelines on prices? Thanks.

Bob, we were there for lunch last Dec.
We were looking forward to a leisurely lunch at Sapphire. We were seated at a lovely window table by a very nice wait person and from there it was downhill. In an effort to be brief, I'll just say the food was bad. I ate half mine and my husband didn't have more than two bites. Expensive wine was ill kept and nearly over the hill. Cocktail prices were deceptive. Just pass this one by and go to 230 Forest. Laguna has many excellent restaurants, don't waste your time and money here.
I realize this restaurant gets mixed reviews and "off days" are often used as an excuse, but there were really no redeeming aspects for me to say, yes eat here.

Yer welcome! A new place we haven't tried yet but will is Rock'n Fish. You might want to check this one out as it has been getting nice reviews.

230 Forest looks good and I'll check out Rock'n Fish. Thanks again.

I would suggest Watermarc as well. I've heard excellent things (but haven't been myself)

My one time at Watermarc did not impress. I thought it was expensive and only one dish out of about 6 was really exceptional. I also got to overhear the neighboring table's entire conversation. I do like 230 Forest and Opah, so his empire of restaurants is not without merit.

Really? My family really liked Watermarc (and I trust their taste in food), but I have yet to try it myself. 230 Forest and Opah are both just good, normal restaurants imo. Nothing to write home about....

Which Laguna restaurants would you write home about? I'm spending a month there in Dec and would appreciate your suggestions.

I thought 230 was as least as good as Watermarc and cheaper. Opah is not in the same class, but for an upscale mini-chain, I have always had good food.

For the price, I just don't think Watermarc is worth it. Here is what I wrote at the time:
"My friend and I split the yellowtail 2 ways, a mini tower of chopped sashimi over a chopped cucumber salad, which was nice, and sashimi layered with avocado, where the fish was overpowered by the avocado and devoid of any heat considering it was supposed to have peppers and wasabi cream. Dinner for me was lamb chops, while my friend had the salmon. Both were good, but neither rose above good. I could get the same dish at any number of restaurants. We added mushrooms and garlic as a veggie side, and again it was OK. Dessert was nice, I liked the bananas 2 ways, the little tempura 'pops' were tasty; and we also tried the 3 mini scoops of ice cream, the best of which was the ginger snap."

The tab was $170 with a mid priced bottle of wine, early last year. For that price, I think I should get more than just OK. I could spend a little more and get a great dinner at a place like Tabu, or Bluefin, or San Shi Go, or Stonehill; or spend less and eat OK (like I thought this was) at a place like the Sundried Tomato or 230 Forest.
