Great lunch spots along the Beeline Highway from Fountain Hills to Mesa..

Heading up to friends cabin near Strawberry for the long NYE weekend and want to have lunch near PHX before heading back to SD..
Have about an hour since its a long drive..

  1. There aren't many (any?) businesses of any kind on that stretch of the Beeline, unless you count the cluster of chain restaurants on Shea just west of the highway and, er, the landfill.

Any reason you'd rather not stop in Tempe or Mesa?

    1. The stretch between Fountain Hills and Mesa is within the Salt River Pima-Maricpoa Indian Community and, as Hohokam says, there's very little along the route within that jurisdiction. I think the best best would be to stop in Fountain Hills and enjoy some pizza or pasta or a deli sandwich at Redendo's. it's good, quick, and just a short jog west of the Beeline at the intersection of Shea & Saguaro Boulevard. I've eaten there a few times after hiking at McDowell Mountain Park and have always had a good experience.

        Thanks to both of you!
I don't really know that area to well...I've eaten at Redendo's for dinner and its quite good.
Anything new in Tempe that is chow worthy and a good spot to meet the in-laws?
        ; )

In the "new in Tempe" category, i'd recommend the Center Bistro. Actually, it's not quite new, but recently resurrected after a false start two years ago. Back in 2008, Center Bistro opened with a menu that was a little heavy on the vegan / raw foods side. Now, after a two-year hiatus, the restaurant is back with a new chef and a new approach. There's still a somewhat health-conscious emphasis to the menu, but this time that's accomplished via fresh, local, organic ingredients. There are always soups, sandwiches, and salads, along with heartier daily specials. I recently had a pan-roasted chicken breast with risotto and Brussels sprouts there, and it was excellent.

The interior is full of natural light, and the staff are quite friendly. It's a very appropriate place for meeting up with in-laws. The place is a little hard to find because it's essentially in the back of the Brickyard / Orchidhouse complex, but look for it near Sixth Street, just east of Mill and right by Tempe City Hall.

Normally, I'd advise taking the train to get there, but since you'll be driving down from Strawberry, park in the garage under the Brickyard. The restaurant validates parking for up to two hours.

If you like Mexican food and want something tasty and fast, there's a Senior Taco about a mile off the Beeline. I have not been to the Fountain Hills location, but the one by my house in Mesa (the name sounds very chain-y but I believe there are only 2 locations) is yummy. My husband is addicted to the red chili carnitas burrito with rice instead of beans and the shrimp burrito is very good as well. Great fresh salsa bar, too. Nice option if you end up wanting to make a quick stop ... or if you haven't tried any Mexican spots in AZ yet. It's not our best Mexican but it's pretty darn tasty. FYI - Senior Taco by me is order at the counter and I'm guessing the FH location is as well. You could order to go and enjoy in the nearby Fountain Hills park which has great views of the mountains and a lake.

Senor Taco is open in Fountain Hills and changed hands a few months ago. It now has a clean health report and serves up some excellent, quick Mexican food. Be sure to check the menu carefully and ask questions about some of the non-self-explanitory menu options. Nice salsa bar included.

      2. House of Tricks still closed on Sunday?
        Four Peaks is another thought..
Is Pita Jungle still decent?...craving some Greek food and we had dinner years ago with a place on Mill..forgot the name.
I always hit up Carolina's but with my in-laws that we're meeting, their a little more formal.
Do you think that Lon's would be a pain in the butt to get to from the 87 south?
Thanks again for all your help!

Yes, House of Tricks is still closed on Sundays.

Four Peaks is good. I'd choose the Tempe location over the Scottsdale one due to the former's historic setting.

I love Pita Jungle, although some others on this board don't. The original location at Apache & Dorsey has recently expanded and is going strong.

The Greek place you visited on Mill might have been Byblos at Mill & Southern. I haven't been there for a while.

Yes, I think Lon's would be challenging to reach from Route 87, at least in comparison to the other places mentioned. Carolina's might be even more out of the way.

            Thanks David!
The Greek restaurant was downtown Tempe but it's been a couple of years.
I love Pita Jungle too..Apache locale would work.
Any good Gastropubs in the area?
            Really appeciate all your help!

            1. re: Beach Chick

In Downtown Tempe, there's a branch of My Big Fat Greek Restaurant, which is not a place I especially like.

As for gastropubs, there have been a few places that have opened recently in places like Ahwatukee and Scottsdale that claim to be gastropubs, but I think few really meet the criteria. I can't really think of one in Tempe.

              1. re: exit2lef

Doesn't have to be Tempe but in the general area since we are coming off the 87 and heading home to San Diego.
Loved to know the gastropubs...decent lunch on Sunday that has some good atmo and of course, the food..
If it didn't involve the in-laws, it wouldn't be such a big deal.

                  1. re: johnseberg

Spitfire looks perfect but they open at 4pm on Sundays..
I'll keep it in the vault for another time.
                    Thanks so much johnseberg!

How about Blue Adobe Grill on Country Club just North of Main ?? Their location should be very convenient for you and they are open all day on Sunday.

                      1. re: aztami

That's a great suggestion. Blue Adobe is right on Route 87, which becomes Country Club as it enters Mesa. The food is New Mexican, but not as fiery as at Los Dos Molinos, and the service is friendly. It would be a good in-law place.

                        1. re: aztami

Place looks great and perfect place to meet up with the in-laws after 4 days of NYE's celebration..
                          Thanks aztami and David!

          2. I'm traveling from the phoenix airport up to Strawberry AZ next week. Looking for a good casual mexican restaurant on the way up. any suggestions?
