Next weekend is the last for Fatted Calf at the Berkeley Farmers Market

A real bummer, but I'm not going to drive to San Francisco to do my shopping. Makes it an especially good thing that Boccalone has been coming to the Sunday Temescal market. I hope they keep it up.

    La Bedaine is also a good alternative for sausages, pates, and rillettes, though of course there's a somewhat smaller selection. But everything is very good and so much less expensive.

      I need a bacon replacement. Fatted Calf is my go-to when I don't have bacon from the Clark Summit CSA. There's always the super spendy Black Pig bacon available at the Pasta Shop, but if I'm going to spend that much I'd rather fly in some Benton's. Sometimes local has to give way to tasty.

        Have you had the bacon from Ver Brugge? It's pretty good and, if I recall correctly, not very expensive. Then again, I'm not picky about bacon--most of the time I find the regular Applewood bacon at Berkeley Bowl to be perfectly adequate. I thought the Fatted Calf stuff was great, but at the same time it didn't change my life.

          Fatted Calf is my favorite bacon too. Last time I was out, I bought some bacon from Marin Sun Farms in Market Hall, and while not quite the same, it was a pretty good substitute.

          I'm totally sad about Fatted Calf leaving Berkeley -- they had a kind of ambiguous note about it in their most recent newsletter, and I contacted them to clarify, and was so sad when they said that they would be out for good. Sigh.

            Bummer, I had hoped that ambiguous note meant "out for the rest of the year" not out for good. I don't always get to the SF market and while having the store is a lovely option, it's not convenient to this East Bay resident on any sort of regular basis.

        The sandwiches at Fatted Calf in SF are not to be missed...agree on Cafe Rouge with some items. I definately prefer their Boudin Noir to FC, but find most things heavy on the salt.

            The guy at the stand indicated that they're too busy with the new store and business in the West Bay.

              They have a store in Napa and another in SF. That's a lot.

              Definitely a bummer but on the plus side I think Cafe Rouge's quality has improved drastically since a year or two ago. Their duck liver mousse is, to my taste, better than FC. I'll miss FC, but am glad to have an excellent alternative close by which is open 6 days a week.
