Phresh Phigs in Philly?

Okay, sorry, I couldn't resist the title. Apologies.

I make this delicious fig, walnut, and brie tart every year on Christmas Eve. It calls for fresh figs but I can't ever find them, so I just substitute dried figs. And it is a great dish anyway, but this year, I have a MISSION to find them. (Get it? Mission? Mission Figs... BOO. Sorry.)

Any advice, Chowhounds?

Have you tried checking at Wegmans? Seems like something they might stock.

Figs are a summer crop, you can find them in backyards in South Philly in July. They might grow some in South America but if you were able to find them here (long shot) they would be quite expensive.

Sounds good. Can you post the recipe on the Home Cooking board?

          Yeah! Here it is: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/752716

It's totally decadent, but really fun and something a bit different.

I bought some fresh figs this year at Whole Foods on Callowhill in Philly, but, as barryg suggests, this was in late summer, not sure whether they would be in stock now....

Sook Hee Produce at the Comcast Center market had them on Friday, albeit expensive, but they were still in very good condition.

Check with Anastasio's Produce on Christian at 9th. They supply restaurants but are open to the public. They put out a display on Saturdays but you can walk up any day and they will sell to you! http://www.anastasioproduce.com/

Phinally! Someone whose philly phig jokes rival my own!

I actually found some at Reading Terminal yesterday at Iovine Bros, of all places! However, as I might need more, all of this inphormation is quite phantastic!

$5 for a small container. Certainly not cheap, but there are about 8 figs in the container which will be enough for my tart. :-D I haven't tried one yet, but they actually look pretty decent.
