Rico's Diner (Oakland) slipping?
Went today for a Rico burger and what I received was nothing like what I've had in the past.
Well it was "like" the burgers I've raved about in the past in that it looked similar and had the same components. But it was a pale shadow of its former self.
The meat used to be, consistently, plump, moist, perfectly charred, and as flavorful as you could imagine. Today's was a flat disc, over-cooked and almost completely tasteless. They must have changed their meat or their method.
It did not seem to me to be simply a result of a bad day in the kitchen - this was a completely different animal.
Any other reports on Rico's lately?

only been there once in june after hearing about the great burgers. went somewhere around lunch time. ordered chicken fried steak. the meat didn't seem that fresh. seem previously frozen.
during my time there. hardly anyone (4 people?) came in. i took that as an omen and never returned.
Is it run by the same people? I haven't been in a while because of the hours (no dinner) but the owners seemed to back the idea of the food...so that has me wondering. Any way, that's a real shame to hear. The burger, fries and coke were under $10 (last time I went) and it really is (was) a great burger and combo.
For what it's worth, there's a recent report on Yelp that likewise speculates on the possibility of new ownership/management (and likewise says the food was much worse than in the past). Apparently, new changes also include expanded hours (until 2 a.m., according to one report???).
I find this news very distressing, as this had been one of my favorite spots. Would love to find out what the real story is...
