New on the Danforth - Part 2

Just noticed a new restaurant sign where Willow used to be. At least I think it will be a restaurant - Factory Girl. Odd name, huh. Anyone have the scoop??

Also driving by this evening I noticed that Leonidis has opened a storefront location, at Logan. Haven't checked it out but looked interesting from the outside. Maybe this is a pop up for the holiday season, I don't know.

  1. My French-Belgian partner freaked out the other day when he saw the Leonidas store-we practically got hit by cars while feverishly crossing the street to get there! I had never had Leonidas chocolates before and personally I thought they were far too sweet for my taste. He said they didn't quite taste the same as those in Belgium. Regardless, I think its a great addition to the neighbourhood.

Do they sell anything other than chocolates? Like hot chocolate or cakes? Reason I asked is that I saw some chairs along the window which made me think they had other goodies???

      1. re: millygirl

I know they sell ice cream at their Queen St. location.

It's right down the block so I've been walking by a few times, always people sitting in there with paper cups so I assume they sell hot chocolate and probably coffee as well. Will have to pop in and check it out, I could do with the occasional European style hot chocolate without going to far.

the gelato at Leonidas is petty special...my pregnant wife can't get enough of the coconut-raspberry. had the tiramisu gelato too, which was equally delicious IMO

As for Leonidas, the chocolates were amazing! There used to be a decadent chocolate store called 'Simryn' closer to the Broadview area, but has since closed down. Leonidas definitely has amazing chocolates.

I probably won't try anything cold until the summer comes, but the ice cream looks good!

This used to be Skyway tours and they moved upstairs! I don't know the reasoning behind the move and switch-up, but Leonidas definitely put a lot of money into the remodeling and interior of the store.

Every time I pass by, there seems to be more and more people inside! Great location and great atmosphere. You wont feel secluded though, they have floor to ceiling windows!

          3. Factory girl? That is a weird name for a restaurant. Not the least bit appetizing.

Am glad to see the last of the Willow though. Over the past ten years, that establishment did more damage to Tex-Mex cuisine than a busy Taco Bell franchise.

At least I think it's a restaurant. But I agree, weird name. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions here. Must keep an eye out for developments.

Factory Girl is the name of a movie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factory_...

My guess is that it could be a woman's clothing store. At least it's not another cheap sushi joint on Danforth, we have enough of those.

                1. re: foodyDudey

Yes that was my second thought.....hmmmm. That might be nice too!

Drove by today after dropping mrs bytpusher off for a mani-pedi down the street and the paper was paritally off the windows and people working in there. It looked like there was a bar being built with lights over it. My impression was it looked like a resto. If I were a betting man I think it might turn out to be be more nightclub than restaurant.

                    1. re: bytepusher

With that name, it could be a nght club. I'm not sure we need another one of those, if it's going to be like another Local Co.

                      1. re: foodyDudey

I went right up to it tonight.. I am pretty sure its a restaurant. There are lots of tables and chairs, and it looks like the building of a bar.

The Willow was pretty bad for food. I suffered the next day twice after eating there. Peer pressure made me go there the second time.

                3. How about this place The Local Company. is it actually new or have I missed it before?

It's not new, and unless there have been some drastic changes, you aren't missing anything. It's been around since 2008 so you must have missed it.

strange, I do go on Danforth from time to time, only spotted it a few weeks ago on my way to the Danforth Pizza House(This of course belongs to Not-so-new on danforth thread, but still so good). guess I havent been paying attention.

                    2. went to factory girl for dinner the other night. had the mussels (2 out of 5), had the sausage appetizer (1 out 5) and had the greek village salad (2 out of 5)

prices are decent and they have a great microbeer on tap from the Ottawa area. this seemed to be a middle aged pickup spot more than anything ...

they had many pizzas/pastas on the menu which i didn't try, but i think its worth another look.

                      my rating is 2 stars.

I peeked my head in the window the other night and felt no desire whatsoever to give them a try. The menu didn't grab me and neither did the atmosphere. It looked somebody just decided to 'open a restaurant' and see what happens.

Just didn't do anything for me.

                      2. Went to Factory Girl last night for a quick supper.

It was a bit dark in terms of decor, but if they were trying for a "cigar bar" feel, they've got there.

Had the spaghetti and meatballs. I will give the benefit of the doubt and say the sauce was at least partially jazzed up by the chef. It had a sweet roasted garlic taste which was appealing. (I usually make my sauce less sweet, but this was pretty good.)

It wasn't spaghetti, it was fettucine. Cooked al dente, which is good. Meatballs were straight from the freezer and reheated. So, overall, edible, but came nowhere close to what I could get at Taps and Tales or Quattro Ragazze.

                        Service was pleasant and efficient.

I could see chilling with some friends here and eating pub snacks. Maybe try out their pizza next time. I can't see it as a destination dinner spot for me, but as a cheery little pub that serves food on the side, it's good enough.

Been to Factory Girl 3 times in the last 4-5 weeks and I think it is fine for a Saturday or Sunday lunch. Food so far is Ok. Service is very friendly and efficient. I like it. Hard to get into the Auld Spot around noon on the weekends now that they have introduced a very popular brunch and Factory Girl so far is a great and nearby alternative.

I've been twice, and no faults with the service. Food, as you say, remained "Ok" both times. Once summer comes with their back patio, I can see it getting more popular, but not necessarily improving their food.
