HICA's Tamale Sale in B'ham - Who's With Me!?

HICA (Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama) is having their annual tamale sale - it was mentioned in City Scene. Orders are now through December 13th and pickup is on the 17th. Choices are chicken, pork, or poblano pepper with Oaxaca cheese, and they're $25/dozen (seems awfully high but it's for a charity...).

The link to order online is here: http://www.hispanicinterest.org/tamales/

I'm ordering. Anyone had these before?

Think of it as a $10 purchase of tamales and a $15 donation to a great cause.
We've been getting the HICA tamales for years. They're pretty good (although for the last several years they have been made by different people). My family and I celebrate our heritage with tamales on Noche Buena (Christmas Eve).

Both of my paternal grandparents came from Mexico after the revolution, and worked their way up to Detroit, where I was born.

Cool. Well I'm half Puerto Rican (father's side), which surprises a lot of people as I inherited my looks from my Mother's side.

Are tamales not typically about $2 each in town, even at the taquerias? Or are they $1? I haven't ordered any in a while.

That's a good question. I honestly don't remember in B'ham. I'm more accustomed to buying them in the Delta, where they're usually around $9/dozen.

Mexican style tamales usually are $1.50 each in markets, probably $2-$2.50 in restaurants around here. The tamal at Kool Korner is around $1 (less than $1.50), but is very different from and less substantial than the Mexican style. You do pay a bit of a premium for HICA tamales, but it's a fundraiser and a good organization! It's certainly a better value than what you get at some of these $100 a plate fundraisers at white tablecloth places.
