How much wine per glass is served at a several course meal with wine pairings?

I'm trying to decide if I should choose a four course meal at a restaurant with or without the wine pairings. The only thing stopping me is that I can't drink four full glasses of wine at a meal, so I'm hoping that when they pair it's a small glass at each course, of maybe 2 oz. Does anyone know, or is it particular to the restaurant?

  1. I don't really think that restaurants are obligated to pour whatever is the max amount that they usually pour.

What's preventing you from just telling them no to pour no more than 2 oz.?

My greedy wine loving and thrift loving hearts are in opposition of each other ;)

    2. I have been the wine director at several high end restaurants, and for a wine tasting/pairing dinner, my experience is that restaurants offer a 2oz and at the most a 40z tasting of each wine. As wine director I always choose 2oz pours, and if someone wishes to try a bit more, I would be happy to offer them more

      1. First off you can always (leave some for the gods) and not finish drinking the pour if it's more than you can handle. Second you could have your date maybe finish drinking what you cannot. I would never however let the potential of a large pour keep me from going to a wine dinner. Honestly would you ask the same question about the portion size of the meal course?

        1. I'm not sure if it's always the case but any time I've ever had a tasting menu it's been the equivalent of about 2 glasses of wine for the whole meal. For four courses it would be about 3 oz per course, for 6-8 course menus about 2 oz.

Wow, maybe I look like a lush but I've never been served only 2 glasses of wine with a tasting menu. Very nearly always, they pour a 4oz glass per course, regardless of number of courses. I've really got to pace myself during 8-10 course menus!

          2. The amount poured will depend on the restaurant. Normally, with a "sommelier's pairing" to accompany a tasting menu, one gets what would be considered a "half-glass," at around 3 - 4 oz. This is enough to enjoy with the course, but not too much. I like a little bit more, as I will hold a touch over, just to try with later courses. Sometimes, that works, and other times I run out.
