French Onion Soup?

OK, so not everyone shares the love for French Onion soup I know. But it certainly makes my family happy, which allows me to enjoy a night out! Last time in town we went to Holder and I loved the hanger steak and the soup kept my daughter busy. But now the menu on the Holder website shows no french onion soup! So I ask of the Chowhounds, any recommendations for french onion soup for the family? Please help!

A while ago Gazette food critic Lesley Chesterman wrote an article about four unusual takes on French onion soup by four well-known Montreal chefs:

However as breezychow menions, any accomplished home cook can pull off a pretty good French onion soup at home. If you're intrigued by the more unorthodox recipies in Chesterman's article, she provides links to their recipies at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for the link; M sur Masson perhaps. And yes I do make french onion soup at home- actually I would put my version (combination of Julia Childs and Delia Smith's) up against anyone's! But when I travel with my daughter, it is a dish that she readily likes and if I can find a resto that has it, and allows me to sample steak frites or duck confit, then everyone is happy.

I've enjoyed the onion soup very much at Au Pied de Cochon.

We took a friend visiting from Asia who has never had onion soup before to APDC and she just about swooned.I fear that to have their onion soup as your very first will only lead to disappointment with other versions in the future.

I have always liked the french onion soup at Thursdays on Crescent St.

I have never had it but they have a french onion and leek soup on the menu of Le Local on William and if I had to guess I'm sure its very good.
The menu should also satisfy what you are looking for.. enjoy!

The best onion soup in Montreal that I've ever tasted is at Creperie Ty Breiz on Rachel St. Pretty close to perfection, but I can only imagine how good M. Picard's take on it would be.
