Birmingham Downtown lunch on Saturday

We will be downtown on Saturday with some time to kill and would like to know if anyone knows a great place to eat lunch.
I know that some places are not open on Saturday. Any suggestions?

We ended up eating at Surin West for lunch and it was pretty good. Hubby's Red curry duck was very tasty. We went to Urban Standard for brunch on Sunday. I thought the food was outstanding. The shrimp and grits were just about perfect. However, I did not care for the ordering process at the counter and self serve condiments, no refills for coffee and no extras like bread with the meal. I loved the food but was put off by the lack of service.

Urban Standard has always been counter service with table delivery and that's it. They were originally lunch only then extended to brunch (do they do dinner too?). It would be a little tougher to change for brunch only to full service but I agree that I prefer full service at brunch.

Highland's Bar and Grill is not downtown.

There is NOTHING open downtown on a Saturday at lunch time that I can think of except Urban Standard.

The only other place I can think of that's actually downtown (vs. Southside) is the restaurant at the Tutwiler.

Bottletree, which is in Avondale (very close to downtown), is open for lunch on Saturdays and is very good. See: http://www.thebottletree.com/btmenu.html

As bovinekid points out, Urban Standard is open as well. If you are into hot dogs, two longtime establishments, Pete's Famous and Gus's, are also open. Beyond that, not much else will be open on Saturday.

I like Urban Standard. It's amost weird how nothing is open for lunch downtown on Saturdays with all of the rennovations in recent years. Lizzie, Southside has a lot more options and is less than a 5-10 minute drive.

Can't agree more about how weird the ghost town known as Birmingham is on the weekend. On the other hand, I can't really recommend Urban Standard, based on what I must admit was a single visit. The sandwiches were very disappointing, IMO. Too dainty and really not a particularly good value. While Brick and Tin frustrates me (mainly because the wait has become really annoying) their sandwiches are pretty tough to beat, downtown anyway
