Crispy, Buttery Almond Croissants in Saratoga!

I stopped by the soft opening for the new bakery in Saratoga Village (a few doors down from Starbucks on Rte 9 ) address is 20490 Saratoga- Los Gatos Road.

They have totally renovated a building that used to house dress shops into a beautiful cafe with marble entry and lots of seating. There is even a terrace with tables for when the weather is nice.

I had the most amazing almond croissant there this morning. Crispy carmelized edges, buttery flaky layers, a good sized ooze of almond paste, crusted with lots of almonds and-- AND it was $2.45! I will go out on a limb here and say it is more delicious, larger, and 1/3 less expensive than the Fleur de Cocoa almond croissants.

I also tasted a sample of their chocolate, chocolate chunk cookie. It was a thick, (moist inside and crispy outside) chocolate batter with chunks of chocolate and walnuts in it. If you are familiar with the Chocolate Orgasm from Rosie's Bakery in Cambridge, it is similar but twice the size and only $2. I can't imagine how they are covering their costs.

At the counter they were making some yummy looking sandwiches on french bread. They are only accepting cash during the soft opening, which limited me. Otherwise, I think I would have emptied the place.

    I sure hope you folks have tried Sugar Butter Flour in west Sunnyvale (ECR at Bernardo and I think there's another location too). Can't speak to filled variants, but the basic croissants, which are butter based too, have been extremely crisp and flavorful, the outsides are so crisp you can break off layers. Just like the ones I used to get when I was a teenager in Paris. (This was a revelation, because other commercial croissants I'd encountered around the south bay, like most of them in the Bay Area, were awful imitations with cheap commercial fats, flaccid and flavorless. There oughta be a law!)

      I should mention I've tried Sugar Butter Flour three times, starting October, sampling a selection of their products including the croissants every time and some of the brightly colored dessert creations, individual-sized portions with things like mango or key-lime mousse. Generally pretty impressive. The individual apple tart Tatin seemed a little heavy but not bad, but the desserts with fruit mousses were delightful and the croissants very classy (and much more convenient than going to Paris for them ;-). I believe SBF's dessert chef came from a high-end restaurant in the region,

        The other SBF is in Campbell's Pruneyard and it is yummy but a little off my beaten path.

        I tried Bell Tower's apricot danish (croissant dough square folded in on two sides around apricot jam) and it was also delightful. The almond croissant is elusive. Apparently there will be a schedule of what croissants come out on which days, later on.
