I'd add: Cafe d'Alsace (2nd Ave. & E. 88 St.); Tokubei 86 (86 St. between 1st & 2nd Ave.) for sushi; Poke (E. 85 St. between 1st & 2nd Ave.) also for sushi (cash only); Tony's di Napoli (2nd Ave. between 83 & 84 St.) for family-style Italian food.

I will second Cafe d'Alsace, they have a good beer selection as well if you are into that.
Also Inase (82nd and 1st) is very good for traditional sushi. Highly recommended.

I've never been to the one on York. And the only thing I've ever eaten at the other one is the hamburger and waffle fries.

Peter's Gourmet Diner on 1st Ave at 83 Street for a cheap lunch or a late breakfast. The home fries with eggs is the best I have had in years. They make a seriously good burger, or patty melt if that's your style. Le Bistro D'A Cote one block down from Peter's is a new French place that's pretty good for dinner.

Sandro's on 81st between 1st/2nd for an upscale Italian meal. I prefer Viand on 86th and 2nd to Gracie's for diner food.
+1 for Two Little Red Hens (86th and 2nd). Get the Brooklyn Blackout cupcake. It's a chocolate cupcake with chocolate pudding in the center. Seriously good.

Nick's pizza on 94 and 2nd ave-short walk, great salad, too. The sausage they use on the sausage pizza is very good.
I second Viand as a diner choice, as well as the Blackout cupcakes at red hen.

Sandro's is wonderful - has become one of my favorite UES places over the last year.

Not a fan of the lemon pasta, but the bucatini amatriciana is amazing. By far the best I've had, and that includes Batali's (at Lupa) and Maialino's. Most of the pastas are great, including the rigatoni. The straccetti, which is slices of grilled beef, is a very simple dish that tastes out of this world. Classic Italian cooking. Gelato makes a great dessert, and is served with piping hot shortbread cookies.
It can get very loud when full, but if that bothers you'd I'd just recommend not going on Fri or Sat during prime dinner hours.
