Who in DFW has good soup dumplings? Been to Yao, Jeng Chi, and Royal China.

  1. Of that group, which place had the best dumplings?

    1. I don't think there is necessarily any one place that is consistently better than those three. You could try Shangai @ Preston & 635 which I can faintly recall being ok. I think Royal China's were my favorite. JS Chen's were disappointing.

        Yao = Yao Fuzi?

        I'm with luniz on Royal China being the favorite (esp. with the dumpling bar) and I also like Jeng Chi's. I can't think of any others that I'd recommend. Would also suggest staying away from Taiwan Cafe.

          If you mean Xiao long bao with the soup inside the dumplings - it's a toss up btw Royal China and Yao Fuzi. JS Chen has terrible food - we went for dim sum and it was awful. My problem with Jeng Chi sometimes is that the meat sometimes doesn't taste as fresh as it should be.

          The dumpling bar is great at Royal china but aside from the hand pulled noodles and dumplings at Royal china we don't really eat anything else there. Everything else seems pretty much like your usual american chinese food.

          Shangai is under new management and haven't been since the change. I will try it again.

            I had the soup dumplings at Shanghai in November.
            After Yao Fuzi's they are a big let down.. The portion size wasn't bad. The price very reasonable in comparison, but that is where the compliments stop. The the dumpling dough was too thick and even dried out in some spots around the top. The dumplings were huge and trying to eat one without making a mess was difficult. The broth was flavorful, salty, a little oily and the meat inside was chewy and a little oldish. It just wasn't a pleasant experience. I ate 3 and brought the rest home to the hub. I wouldn't recommend them.

        3. I have always favored on the side of Yao Fuzi, and that was after extensive taste tests earlier this year on xiao long bao in the Dallas area. I know there is a new dumpling chef at Royal China that Brenner has been on about and would love to pop in their for a round of the dumplings.
