Subject says it all, best lunch within a 5 minute walk of Houston & Sullivan.

If it were someone from out of town looking for real history, I'd just go to Yonah Schimmel's knish bakery on E. Houston. Maybe a little more than a 5 minute walk, but it is a trip.
Disclaimer: I have not been there in years.
It's hit or miss, mostly miss. I would try it if I were going to be walking by anyway, but making a special trip would be a mistake, in my opinion.
nicer: Jane on Houston & Laguardia
where i would go: Five Guys on Laguardia between Houston and Bleecker.
Thanks all for the suggestions, but on realizing that Ed's Lobster Bar is open for lunch, that's where I'll be taking the wife for birthday lunch today.

Ali Doro on Macdougal
Depends on how fast you walk, but Blue Ribbon Bakery is on Downing. Grey Dog Cafe on Carmine is good for inexpensive soups and sandwiches.

Cafe Aroma, on Houston and Greene. Super fresh salads and bread. Best bakery for dessert ever.
