Has anyone tried Carolina Kitchen in Hyattsville?

We were at the Old Dominion Brew Pub for a party Saturday and ended up at Carolina Kitchen. Wow, was it good. If you're craving Southern/Soul food, it's the best I've had this close to the Mason-Dixon line!

Really? I've been there a couple of times, and I've found it pretty unremarkable. What did you get?

Gosh, I hope our meal wasn't an anomaly, as we intend to go back in a couple weeks. It's worth the hour's drive, and I don't say that about too many places.

The food at Carolina Kitchen is not good at all. I frequently visit Hyattsville and last year decided to take a friend of mine there for dinner we were both let down by the food.

Your better off try Levi's in Mitchellville

I think the owners opened a spot (also called Carolina Kitchen) near 12th and U that didn't fare too well and closed. I ate there once. It was a nice option but not as good as the nearby Oohhs and Aahhs.

The one near U Street (unless there were 2 with "Carolina" in the name) was A Taste of Carolina. So maybe not related to Carolina Kitchen.

I'm pretty sure that the ones in Hyattsville (and Largo) have the same ownership as the one that was in Silver Spring.

Is this the same Carolina Kitchen that used to be in downtown Silver Spring several years ago? If so, it was really good then.

We got take out from their cafeteria line, but they also have a sit down restaurant.

My husband had meatloaf which had a very sweet glaze/sauce, which we didn't much care for, and he thought the yams were too sweet as well. But everything else we had was wonderful. I had baked chicken that was tender and just fell off the bone. The collard greens were a big stand out. They were slightly sweet, but peppery and flavorful -- and not at all greasy. I ate them cold the next day and they were even better. The macaroni and cheese was cheesy, creamy, and exactly the way I like it. The green beans were equally as good.

I'm not a good describer of meals, sorry to say. But I'm from Texas and I know and love good southern cooking. We didn't have anything fried, which is the litmus test for a southern kitchen, so I can't compare Carolina Kitchen's fried fish or chicken with Flavors. The sides at CK were better than Flavors' sides. I've not been to Oohs and Aahs so can't compare.

Now, we had been stuck in traffic for 2 hours, trying to get to the party, so I wondered if it was just that we were so hungry. But it tasted just as good the next day, if not better.

Thanks - I'll tack it on to my list of places to try over coming weeks.
