Only just saw this, TJ, but my partner and I just had some really good house made salamis at Buon Tavola in Paso (iirc, they have a SLO location as well). They presented three types sliced on an antipasti plate, though to be honest, I couldn't give you the names (they were in Italian, natch), but they do have them available for purchase Not cheap, I think we paid $25 for two decent sized sticks, but it was well worth the price. Maybe check them out.

Columbus Salame lists Ralph's, Albertson's, Smart & Final, and Cost Plus as retailers in San Luis Obispo, but no idea is they carry the artisan line.

In Salinas, we buy Molinari at Costco. Maybe your local store has it too.

found some Molinari at a local independant grocer, Spencer's along with good old Columbus. Package on its way to North Carolina, where I hope they appreciate these things. Also sent some locally roasted coffee and some Tiber Canyon Yuzu and Mandarin Orange Oilve Oils.
It's fun to pick out locally produced foods and ship them to areas where folks don't have access to them. I'm still hoping a relative of mine will move to Oregon hazlenut country!
thanks for the tips--will try to get one of those Buona Tavola sticks! I grew up on SF salami and french bread--now if I could just find a good french bread around here. They are all nuts here for sourdough --yawn-- how I dream of good crusty, sweet french.

TJ: if you should find yourself in Salinas, the meat counter of Star Market also offers artisanal dry salami in smaller sizes.

Yep, Star Market has the Columbus artisanal line. In fact, it has an amazing array of salume and very good prices. The imported Palacio Spanish chorizo is about 25% less than it costs in the Bay Area. Star has Fra Mani and several other producers as well. I think there might be upwards of two dozen different styles of dry salami to choose from.

oh, my, another Salinas chow stop. I always stop nearby for cheap gas so I'll be in the neighborhood already; EZ off, EZ on.

turns out Trader Joe's has some Columbus as a two-pcak, and also a TJ brand wine flavored line. I found two, a Pinot Grigio and a (?) red.

and Muzio's in SLO carries Molinari year-round, as does Lund's in Arroyo Grade for the holidays only. I took some Molnari to a holiday party and it got raves. It's sweeter and less salty that Columbus, also fattier, with a coarser grind.
