VITO'S PIZZA QUESTION

Yeah, I know I'm grabbing at straws here but I need help. One of my teen lads aka BreadBoy loves Vito's breadsticks that are drizzeled with olive oil and fresh garlic and a bit of fresh parsley. We live far from the restaurant and while we do make the trip to W. Hollywood sometimes BreadBoy wants his breadsticks at home. The only component that I haven't been able to duplicate for a reasonable price is the olive oil. I tried asking last week and got "Oh it's olive oil with garlic!"
I haven't seen the container in the kitchen or storage area. We've done tastings at various olive oil purveyors and the only one that came close was $22.50 for a 375ml bottle. Now I know ol' Vito is not sourcing oil that costly for his offerings! More likely it's a product in 4 or 5 litre tins. PLEASE, does anyone in chowland know what olive oil they use?! Whomever has the answer, I'll owe you a slice or three. Ok, make it a whole pie!

  1. Why don't you call and ask?

I asked in person and got a vague answer as I already mentioned.....

Why not try Costco's olive oil and saute so,e garlic in it. Cosyco just got some very high praises for their olive oil, just put 2 cups in a pan and saute a ton of garlic till it just starts to change color. Use the oil and save the garlic for future use, it will have a mellower flavor.

Good idea. He has taste tested most of Costco's offerings but I didn't saute the garlic in it. Will give that a try! Still wondering what oil Veto buys though!

Just have to keep your eyes open when you are there. In some old restaurants you have to walk by or through the kitchen to get to the bathrooms. It is amazing what you can find out.

I have no idea WHO you asked.
I think Vito is often there at lunch but I rarely see him there in the evening. Though, It has been a while since I rarely go at lunch. I would call around 11:30-12 and ask.

We go to Vito's quite often often but I haven't seen Vito for months. Apparently he is in every morning to make the pizza (and breadstick) dough but by the time we are there he is long gone!

      2. this isn't an answer to your question unfortunately, but have you tried buying extra and freezing it, then rewarming in oven? ...or are you trying to cut cost too?

        1. You can try Guidi Marcello in Santa Monica. Their house olive oil is not bad for the price (something like $6-9/bottle), and they have a good selection of other olive oils (bottles, cases of bottles, and larger tins) as well. I think they'll be happy to suggest some for you.
