Suggestions for nice group dinner (ala Zuni, Spruce, Boulevard)

Hi SF Hounds,
I'll be visiting from NYC next month, and I'm hosting a dinner for 10 people. Last time I was in San Francisco, I took big groups to Zuni Cafe, Spruce, and Boulevard. This dinner will be similar, so I'm looking for recommendations for any new places in that price range that can handle a big group. Thanks for your help!

  1. Jardiniere is pretty good, comparable to your preferences. Call them and see what room/area works for you. A16 in the Marina has a small, private room in the back that I like. The glassed-in room at Slanted Door (Ferry Building) is very cool.

Two of the hottest new restaurants in SF right now where you can find really good food at similar price points are: (1) Wayfare Tavern and (2) Prospect.

I'll be back in town on the 16th for five days/nights. I was thinking of visiting some old shops that I haven't seen in awhile but that may not be the best plan. What would you do?

Is there anything specific that you want to eat? At least that's how I usually figure out my eating schedule -- I ask myself not which restaurant I'd like to visit but what dishes I'd like to enjoy. If not a particular dish, what about a type of cuisine?

For instance, I like the fried chicken at Wayfare Tavern and the potato dumplings with escargot at Prospect. I find the food better at dinner than at lunch.

    2. Aquerello, for sure.

Basically, your list is Michelin 1 star, so trawling the rest of the list is reasonable. 10 is not terribly large, so I would think Quince, One Market, Masa's, Luce, Ame, Aziza, La Folie would all be reasonable. Prices among those are sort of all over the map, and different levels of formality, so you'll need to do a little research.

I love Kokarri's private room. Or if you're looking to relax and have the food come to you how about the Brazilian BBQ spot, Espestues?
