Pho n' rice tonight - meh.
We headed to Pho n' Rice tonight on a whim because my wife wanted some Tom Yum soup and I wanted some Pho. This isn't a terribly long writeup. She had her soup and a Yum Woon Sen salad, and I had Mi Hoanh Thanh, which was billed as pork and shrimp dumplings with sliced pork in chicken broth.
My soup broth was decent, but the very tiny dumplings kept falling apart and I had to go fishing for the lost fillings, and the "sliced pork" was little fried pieces of something that may have been skin, or something, I couldn't tell. Her soup was way salty, like someone held a bottle of fish sauce over the bowl for WAY too long, and the salad was also fish sauce city, both items really missing balance or at least some lime. The salad was also quite spicy, more than the one pepper on the menu suggested.
We generally have gone here when we are on a hooky day from work and it's generally decent. I should have stuck with my default Pho tai or the duck soup. What's frustrating is that I can't figure out if the fluke is when it's good, instead of just meh. With the ample other choices in the area, it's hard to gamble on the inconsistencies in the future.

I'm a pretty frequent patron of Pho'n'Rice, and while they do seem to have off days, they are the exception. I haven't noticed a useful pattern, except that the fresh rolls with shrimp are usually pre-made, but if you order 'em with pork, they're made up fresh.
the "Mi Hoanh Thanh" -- pronounce it -- is pork wonton soup. Usually it has really substantial slices of pork, plus those crunchy skin bits. So definitely something off.
